Glutarex 500
Glutarex 500 is a nutraceutical/herbal supplement (marketed in Bangladesh, sold as capsules by Total Herbal & Nutraceuticals and similar distributors) whose active ingredient is L-Glutathione 500 mg. It is not a conventional prescription pharmaceutical - it's classified under "Herbal and Nutraceuticals." (Note: this is different from Abbott's "Glutarex-1/Glutarex-2," which are unrelated medical foods used for a rare inherited metabolic disorder, glutaric aciduria type I - don't confuse the two products just because the names are similar.)
Uses
Glutathione is the body's main intracellular antioxidant. Glutarex 500 is generally taken/marketed for:
- Antioxidant support - neutralizing oxidative stress and protecting cells from free-radical damage
- Skin brightening/lightening - its most popular commercial use, especially for melasma and hyperpigmentation
- General immune support
- As an adjunct in various conditions where oxidative stress plays a role - discussed in relation to cancer, HIV/AIDS, type 2 diabetes, hepatitis, and Parkinson's disease, and sometimes used to help offset chemotherapy-related toxicity
A 2025 systematic review on glutathione as a skin-lightening agent found oral and topical glutathione can reduce pigmentation in melasma, though evidence quality varies across studies and optimal dosing/duration isn't firmly established (PMID: 39444151).
Side Effects
Oral glutathione up to 500 mg/day for up to 2 months is generally considered "possibly safe," but safety data beyond that duration is limited. Reported side effects include:
- Abdominal cramps / stomach discomfort
- Bloating
- Headache
- Allergic reactions, including skin rash
- Difficulty breathing due to bronchospasm (more relevant to inhaled forms, but noted as a possible reaction)
Precautions
- Pregnant or breastfeeding women should consult a doctor before use
- People with asthma, or liver/kidney disease, should be cautious
- Long-term safety data (beyond ~2 months of daily use) is limited, so it's best not to self-prescribe indefinitely
- Since it's sold as a nutraceutical rather than a tightly regulated drug, formulation quality and actual bioavailability can vary by manufacturer
Bottom line: Glutarex 500 (L-Glutathione 500 mg) is a supplement used mainly for antioxidant support and skin lightening, with generally mild side effects (GI upset, bloating, rare allergic reactions) at recommended doses, but it should be used under medical guidance, particularly for anything beyond short-term general wellness use.
