PROQUAD MMRV vaccine route of administration subcutaneous

ProQuad (MMRV) can be given by either subcutaneous (SC) or intramuscular (IM) route - both are approved.
Key details per the FDA package insert:
FeatureDetail
RoutesSubcutaneous (SC) or Intramuscular (IM)
Dose0.5 mL single dose
Injection sitesDeltoid region of upper arm or anterolateral thigh
Do NOTInject intravascularly (IV)
Age schedule:
  • Dose 1: 12-15 months of age
  • Dose 2: 4-6 years of age
Important note: Compare this to PRIORIX (a different MMR vaccine), which is subcutaneous only. ProQuad has the added flexibility of IM administration as well. According to a PubMed study (PMID 30481110), the IM and SC routes produce equivalent immunogenicity for all antigens when using the 2-dose MMRV regimen.
Bottom line: For exam purposes, ProQuad is most classically administered subcutaneously, but the official FDA label approves both SC and IM routes.
