doxycycline erectile dysfunction side effect

Doxycycline is not known to directly affect erections or cause erectile dysfunction. It isn't listed as a recognized side effect in standard drug references (drugs.com, major clinical pharmacology texts) or in the textbook library entries on doxycycline's adverse effect profile.
What doxycycline's adverse effects actually include (per Goodman & Gilman's Pharmacological Basis of Therapeutics and Goldman-Cecil Medicine):
  • GI upset (nausea, vomiting, dyspepsia, diarrhea) - most common
  • Photosensitivity (sunburn-like skin reaction)
  • Esophageal irritation/ulceration if not taken with enough water
  • Candida vaginitis, C. difficile colitis (from disrupting normal flora)
  • Tooth discoloration in children (contraindicated under age 8, and in pregnancy)
  • Rarely, vestibular symptoms (more with minocycline), anxiety
None of this involves a direct pharmacological effect on penile blood flow, nerve function, or the mechanisms underlying erection (which depend on nitric oxide-mediated smooth muscle relaxation and vascular inflow).
Indirect possibilities worth knowing:
  • If doxycycline is being used to treat an active infection (e.g., a urinary tract or prostate infection, STI), the illness itself - pain, malaise, systemic inflammation - can temporarily reduce libido or erectile function, and this can improve once treated.
  • Some men report anecdotal, temporary sexual side effects (reduced libido, mild ED) while unwell or anxious about a diagnosis (e.g., an STI being treated with doxycycline), but this isn't attributed to the drug's pharmacology in clinical literature - it's more likely situational/psychological or tied to the underlying condition.
  • General antibiotic use can occasionally disrupt gut flora and, in rare individual cases, affect mood/energy, which could indirectly affect libido, but this is not specific to erectile function and isn't well documented for doxycycline specifically.
If you're experiencing erection problems while taking doxycycline, it's more likely related to the condition being treated, stress/anxiety, or another concurrent medication rather than the doxycycline itself. If it persists after finishing the course, it's worth mentioning to your prescribing doctor to rule out other causes.
