Thorax is circular in children, kidney-shaped in adults

A baby's chest is round like a ball when you look at it from above. An adult's chest is wider side-to-side and flatter front-to-back, so it looks more like a kidney bean (or an oval squished from the front).
Here's why this change happens:
In babies and young children:
The ribs are nearly horizontal (they stick straight out to the sides)
The chest is almost as deep front-to-back as it is wide side-to-side
This makes the cross-section look like a circle
As we grow into adults:
The ribs start to angle downward (they slope from the spine down toward the front)
The chest expands more side-to-side than front-to-back
The sternum (breastbone) moves slightly inward
This flattens the chest front-to-back, making the cross-section look like a kidney shape - wide but not very deep
Why does this happen?
Gravity: once a child starts standing and walking upright, gravity pulls the chest downward over years
The diaphragm (breathing muscle) pulls the lower ribs inward
Muscles and weight of the abdominal organs reshape the lower chest
The ribcage adapts to upright walking and breathing patterns
Simple analogy: Imagine a round loaf of bread (baby chest). Now press it slightly from the front and back while pulling the sides out - you get a kidney shape (adult chest).
This is why doctors check chest shape in children - a "barrel chest" in an older child or adult (where the chest stays round) can be a sign of conditions like chronic asthma or emphysema, where the lungs are over-inflated and pushing the chest back into that childhood circular shape.
