I recently changed my number. I mean, I added another SIM because I moved to the US. And now I think I'm not able to receive iMessage or send iMessage or receive FaceTime or do FaceTime. I want to update number in that and make this all active. I don't see my contacts synced with that properly. What can I do?

iPhone iCloud contacts not syncing new SIM fix 2025

Here's the full fix, broken into three parts:

Part 1: Fix iMessage

Step 1 - Check your Apple ID has the new number:
  1. Go to Settings > [Your Name]
  2. Tap Name, Phone Numbers, Email
  3. Under "Reachable At," check that your new US number is listed. If it's missing, tap Edit and add it.
Step 2 - Enable your number in iMessage:
  1. Go to Settings > Apps > Messages (or just Settings > Messages on older iOS)
  2. Make sure iMessage is toggled ON
  3. Tap Send & Receive
  4. Under "You Can Receive iMessages To and From," tap your new US number so a checkmark appears next to it
  5. Also set your new number as the "Start New Conversations From" option

Part 2: Fix FaceTime

  1. Go to Settings > Apps > FaceTime (or Settings > FaceTime)
  2. Make sure FaceTime is toggled ON
  3. Under "You Can Be Reached by FaceTime At," tap your new US number to put a checkmark next to it
  4. Set it as the "Start New Calls From" number too
Important: Do FaceTime first, then iMessage - several users found this order matters.

Part 3: If It's Still Stuck on "Waiting for Activation..."

This usually happens when the new SIM hasn't fully registered with Apple's servers yet. Try these in order:
  1. Toggle off and back on - Turn iMessage/FaceTime off, wait 30 seconds, turn back on
  2. Restart your phone - A simple restart after re-enabling often clears the stuck state
  3. Sign out and back in - Go to Settings > Messages > Send & Receive > tap your Apple ID > Sign Out, then sign back in
  4. Full reset sequence - Turn off iMessage AND FaceTime, remove the SIM, power off the phone, reinsert SIM, power on, then re-enable both
  5. Check date/time - Go to Settings > General > Date & Time and make sure "Set Automatically" is ON (wrong time zone blocks activation)

Part 4: Fix Contacts Not Syncing

  1. Go to Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud
  2. Tap Show All under "Apps Using iCloud"
  3. Find Contacts and make sure it's toggled ON
  4. If it was already on, try toggling it OFF, wait 10 seconds, and toggle it back ON
  5. Tap Merge if prompted - this keeps your existing contacts and merges them with iCloud
If contacts still don't appear:
  • Go to Settings > Apps > Contacts and confirm your iCloud account is listed as the default account

One thing to note: Since you moved to the US, your carrier needs to support iMessage activation. Most major US carriers (AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon) do this automatically, but it can take up to 24 hours after the SIM is active for Apple's servers to register the number. If you've just inserted the SIM today, give it a few hours and try again.
