2-Week Pathology Study Plan

Total topics: 12 long answers (10 marks) + 36 short answers (5 marks) = 48 topics Approach: Group by organ system/theme so concepts overlap and reinforce each other. Spend mornings on 10-mark topics (they need more depth) and evenings on 5-mark topics from the same system.

How to Study Each Topic

  • 10-mark question: Write a structured answer: Definition → Classification → Etiology → Pathogenesis → Morphology (Gross + Micro) → Clinical features → Lab findings → Complications. ~600-800 words.
  • 5-mark question: Definition + 3-4 key points + one diagram or table if applicable. ~200-300 words.
  • Daily habit: Read → Write a rough answer from memory → Compare with book → Revise.

Week 1: Foundations + Cardiovascular + Hematology

Day 1 (Sunday) - Cell Injury & Necrosis

10-mark: Define inflammation. Describe Vascular & Cellular events of inflammation. 5-mark: Types of Necrosis | Edema | Difference between Transudate & Exudate
These three 5-mark topics are all linked to the same inflammatory/cell injury pathology.

Day 2 (Monday) - Blood & Anemia

10-mark: Define Anemia. Causes & lab findings of Iron Deficiency Anemia. 10-mark: Define Anemia. Megaloblastic anemia - classification, pathogenesis, clinical features, lab. 5-mark: Haemophilia | Thrombosis | Transfusion Reaction

Day 4 (Wednesday) - Leukemia / Lymphoma / Neoplasia Basics

10-mark: Define Neoplasia. Difference between Benign & Malignant Tumors. 5-mark: Define & classify Neoplasia | Differentiate Leukemoid reaction vs CML | Retinoblastoma | Down syndrome | Turner syndrome
Chromosomal conditions (Down, Turner) pair well with tumor genetics.

Day 5 (Thursday) - Respiratory + Infections

5-mark: Pneumonia | Tuberculosis | Asthma | Meningitis
These are all 5-mark topics - do 4 in one day. Use a comparison table for pneumonia types.

Day 6 (Friday) - GI Tract

10-mark: Etiology, pathogenesis, Gross & Microscopy - Carcinoma of Stomach. 10-mark: Define Peptic Ulcer disease. Etiology, pathogenesis, morphology, clinical features & complications. 5-mark: Peptic ulcer (revise short version) | Metaplasia | Chronic Hepatitis | Cirrhosis of Liver

Day 7 (Saturday) - REVISION DAY 1

  • Redo all Day 1-6 topics in condensed form (headlines only)
  • Write out 2 full 10-mark answers from memory (without looking)
  • Focus on any weak areas

Week 2: Renal + Oncology + Endocrine + Bone + Neuro

Day 8 (Sunday) - Renal

10-mark: Classify Renal Tumors & discuss pathology of Renal Cell Carcinoma. 10-mark: Define & classify Nephrotic Syndrome. Lab investigations. 5-mark: Nephrotic Syndrome (short) | Renal failure

Day 9 (Monday) - Female Reproductive Tumors

Day 10 (Tuesday) - Endocrine + Metabolic

5-mark: Type I Diabetes Mellitus | Rickets | Osteoporosis | Osteomyelitis

Day 11 (Wednesday) - Neurology + Cerebrovascular

5-mark: Cerebral infarction | Types & causes of Cerebrovascular Disease | Meningitis (revise) | Infarction - types with examples
All relate to ischemia and vascular pathology.

Day 12 (Thursday) - Wound Healing + Misc

5-mark: Primary Wound Healing | Mechanism of wound healing & repair & factors affecting it | Metaplasia (revise) | Edema (revise)

Day 13 (Friday) - FULL REVISION

  • Go through all 12 ten-mark topics: write the outline/skeleton of each answer (headings only, 5 minutes per topic)
  • Go through all 36 five-mark topics: write the 3 key points for each in a list
  • Mark topics you are shaky on

Day 14 (Saturday) - MOCK EXAM DAY

  • Pick 3 random 10-mark questions and write full answers under timed conditions (20 min each)
  • Pick 6 random 5-mark questions and write answers (10 min each)
  • Self-evaluate against your notes

Quick Tips

  • Don't read passively. Write rough answers, then check. Active recall beats rereading.
  • Diagrams save time. A labelled diagram of wound healing, inflammation, or shock classification can replace 100 words in an exam.
  • Tables are powerful. Use comparison tables for: Benign vs Malignant, Transudate vs Exudate, Types of shock, Iron deficiency vs Megaloblastic anemia.
  • Link topics. Atherosclerosis → Thrombosis → MI → Shock is one chain. Learning it as a story is faster than 4 isolated topics.
  • Day 13 is the most important day. A structured revision is more valuable than reading new material the day before.
