ACOG ovarian cyst treatment patient FAQ
If you mean an ovarian cyst, treatment depends on its type, size, ultrasound appearance, symptoms, age, and whether you are pregnant or postmenopausal.
- Small, simple cysts with mild or no symptoms: often need only observation. Many functional cysts resolve on their own within about 6 to 8 weeks. Your clinician may repeat an ultrasound. ACOG guidance
- Pain relief: acetaminophen or an anti-inflammatory such as ibuprofen may help if safe for you. Ask a clinician or pharmacist if you have kidney disease, ulcers, blood-thinner use, pregnancy, or medication allergies.
- Hormonal birth control: may reduce formation of new functional cysts, but does not reliably make an existing cyst disappear.
- Surgery: may be advised if the cyst is large, persistent, complex on ultrasound, causes significant pain, twists the ovary, ruptures with bleeding, or has features concerning for cancer. When appropriate, laparoscopic cyst removal while preserving the ovary is preferred. ACOG treatment overview
Get urgent emergency care now for sudden severe one-sided pelvic/abdominal pain, pain with vomiting, fainting/dizziness, shoulder pain, fever, or heavy vaginal bleeding. These can indicate ovarian torsion, rupture, internal bleeding, ectopic pregnancy, or infection.
Also, an ovarian cyst is not the same as PCOS. PCOS needs separate assessment and treatment.
Please arrange a gynecology visit, especially if you have persistent pain, bloating, irregular bleeding, a positive pregnancy test, or are postmenopausal.
