International Classification of Diseases (ICD) - Background

  • The ICD was produced by WHO and accepted in 1940 for national and international use.
  • It has been revised approximately once every 10 years.
  • In the 6th revision (1948), the scope was expanded to cover morbidity from illness and injury (previously it only covered causes of death).
  • ICD-10 (10th Revision) came into effect on January 1, 1993.
Purpose of ICD:
  • It is the international standard for reporting diseases and health conditions.
  • It is a diagnostic classification standard for all clinical and research purposes.
  • ICD defines the universe of diseases, disorders, injuries, and other related health conditions in a comprehensive, hierarchical fashion, which allows for:
    • Easy storage, retrieval, and analysis of health information for evidence-based decision-making
    • Sharing and comparing health information between hospitals, regions, settings, and countries
    • Data comparison in the same location across different time periods

ICD-11

Adoption: Adopted by the World Health Assembly in 2019; came into effect from 1st January 2022.
Key features:
  • Updated for the 21st century, reflecting significant progress in science and medicine over the past 30 years.
  • Designed for use with digital health applications; can be accessed online or downloaded free of charge in multiple languages via an online browser.
  • Comprises over 55,000 entities and 120,000 clinical terms (can code millions of terms).
  • Contains thousands of new categories and updated classification schemes.
  • Intended to supersede ICD-10, which was more than 28 years old and clinically outdated.
