Ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury occurs when blood flow is restored to a tissue after a period of ischemia, paradoxically causing additional damage beyond what the ischemia alone produced. The main mechanisms involve reactive oxygen species (ROS) burst, calcium overload, neutrophil activation, and complement activation upon reperfusion.
