Hi

Hi! What can I help you with today?

Who are you

I'm Orris, an AI assistant that helps with questions across many areas. I'm especially set up for medical and clinical topics, where I can pull from a library of medical textbooks and search PubMed for peer-reviewed evidence. I can also search the web, find medical images, and create documents such as Word files, PDFs, slide decks and spreadsheets.
What would you like to work on?

Are you gpt or claude

I'm Orris. I don't know which underlying model powers me, so I can't tell you if it's GPT, Claude, or something else.

What is headache?

A headache is pain felt in the head, and sometimes the face or upper neck. It is one of the most common symptoms in medicine.
Where the pain comes from
Brain tissue itself can't feel pain. Headache comes from pain-sensitive structures in and around the head. These include the meninges, the large venous sinuses, the tentorium and the dura at the skull base, and the meningeal blood vessels. The middle meningeal artery is especially sensitive. Structures outside the skull, such as the sinuses, can also cause it. Pain from deep structures is often felt on the surface of the head, which is called referred pain. - Guyton and Hall Textbook of Medical Physiology, Headache section
Two main categories
TypeMeaningCommon examples
PrimaryThe headache is the disease itself. There is no underlying structural cause.Tension-type headache, migraine, cluster headache
SecondaryThe headache is a symptom of another condition.Meningitis, subarachnoid hemorrhage, tumor, giant cell arteritis, sinusitis, medication overuse, raised or low CSF pressure, post-traumatic headache
Primary headaches make up the large majority of cases.
Typical features of the common primary types
  • Tension-type: Usually a bilateral, pressing or band-like ache of mild to moderate intensity. It does not worsen with activity. It is the most common type, including in pregnancy (Bradley and Daroff's Neurology in Clinical Practice).
  • Migraine: Often unilateral and throbbing, with nausea and sensitivity to light and sound. Some people have an aura first. Attacks can last 4 to 72 hours.
  • Cluster: Severe pain around one eye, lasting 15 to 180 minutes. It comes with tearing, a runny nose or a drooping eyelid on the same side, and occurs in clusters of daily attacks.
Red flags that suggest a secondary cause and need urgent assessment
  • Sudden "thunderclap" onset, or the worst headache of your life
  • Fever with neck stiffness
  • New headache after age 50, especially with jaw pain or scalp tenderness
  • Neurological deficits, confusion, seizures or reduced consciousness
  • Headache after head injury
  • A progressive pattern, or pain that wakes you from sleep or worsens with coughing or straining
  • Headache in someone who is pregnant or immunocompromised, or who has cancer
Evidence check: A quick PubMed search of recent systematic reviews and meta-analyses found nothing that contradicts this basic framework. One 2026 meta-analysis (PMID 42363048) questions whether "episodic" and "chronic" migraine are truly separate categories. That is a refinement and doesn't change the definition above.
I can go deeper on migraine, tension-type headache, cluster headache, red-flag evaluation or treatment if you'd like.

It has 10 slides:
  1. Title
  2. What is a headache?
  3. Where headache pain comes from: pain-insensitive vs pain-sensitive structures
  4. Classification: primary vs secondary
  5. Tension-type, migraine and cluster headache compared in a table
  6. Red flags that suggest a secondary cause

Slides 3 and 9 come from the Guyton and Hall Textbook of Medical Physiology and Bradley and Daroff's Neurology in Clinical Practice. The comparison table, red flags, evaluation steps and management slides come from my general medical knowledge, not the library. Please check drug choices and doses against current guidelines before using them clinically.
The image search found no suitable figures, so the slides use text and shapes only. I can add specific diagrams if you have some, or change the length or depth.
