Ofloxacin FDA prescribing information fluoroquinolone boxed warning
Ofloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic that kills susceptible bacteria by interfering with bacterial DNA replication.
- Available as oral tablets, eye drops (0.3%), and ear drops (0.3%). Its use depends on the formulation and infection site.
- Oral ofloxacin is now used less often in many settings because safer alternatives are often available and fluoroquinolone resistance is common.
- It does not treat viral illnesses such as colds or flu.
Important oral-tablet safety warning: fluoroquinolones can rarely cause serious, sometimes long-lasting effects including tendon inflammation or rupture, nerve pain/numbness, central nervous system effects, and worsening of myasthenia gravis. Stop the medicine and seek medical advice urgently for tendon pain or swelling, weakness, burning/tingling or numbness, severe mood/confusion symptoms, or an allergic reaction. For oral tablets, antacids or supplements containing aluminum, magnesium, calcium, iron, or zinc can reduce absorption, so they generally need to be separated from the dose as instructed by the prescriber or pharmacist.
