London has a temperate oceanic climate: generally mild, changeable, and relatively rainy throughout the year.
- Winter (Dec-Feb): cool rather than severely cold. Typical daytime temperatures are about 8-10°C; frost and snow occur but are usually brief.
- Spring (Mar-May): variable, gradually warming. April and May can be pleasant but showers remain common.
- Summer (Jun-Aug): usually warm, with daytime highs often around 21-24°C. Short heatwaves can bring temperatures above 30°C.
- Autumn (Sep-Nov): mild at first, then cooler and wetter, especially in October and November.
- Rainfall: about 585 mm annually, fairly evenly spread across the year. London is not as wet as its reputation suggests, but light rain and overcast days are frequent.
- Sunshine: summers have long daylight hours, while winter days are short and often cloudy.
- City effect: central London is commonly warmer than nearby rural areas because of the urban heat-island effect.
