What Is It?

Ashtavarga Kashaya is a classical Ayurvedic herbal decoction rooted in Kerala Ayurveda tradition. The name means "decoction of eight groups/ingredients" (Ashta = eight, Varga = group/division, Kashaya = decoction). It is referenced in Sahasra Yoga, Kashaya Prakarana 15-17.

Preparation: All eight herbs in equal parts + 8 parts water, boiled and reduced to 1/4 volume, then filtered.

Dose

  • Liquid decoction: 15-20 ml, mixed with 60 ml warm water, taken twice daily before meals (or as directed by physician)
  • Tablet form: 1-2 tablets twice daily
  • Always taken on an empty stomach or as prescribed

Precautions & Side Effects

  • Garlic (Lasuna) content can cause gastric disturbance (gas, acidity, reflux) - especially in those not accustomed to garlic in diet
  • Eranda (castor) has mild laxative action - may cause loose stools at high doses
  • Not recommended in: active peptic ulcer, pregnancy (castor is uterine stimulant), or individuals with Pitta predominance without physician guidance
  • Long-term use should be supervised by an Ayurvedic physician
