Recurrent acute pancreatitis (RAP) is defined as two or more distinct, documented episodes of acute pancreatitis, with complete or near-complete clinical resolution between episodes and no established chronic pancreatitis.
Each episode should meet diagnostic criteria for acute pancreatitis, typically at least 2 of:
Typical acute upper abdominal pain
Serum amylase and/or lipase more than 3 times the upper reference limit
Imaging findings consistent with acute pancreatitis
RAP differs from chronic pancreatitis because there is no persistent structural pancreatic damage or ongoing pancreatic insufficiency between attacks. Pancreapedia review
