LHV (Lady Health Visitor) in PSM

Definition / Designation

The Lady Health Visitor (LHV) is also officially designated as Health Assistant (Female) at the Primary Health Centre (PHC) level in India's public health system. She is the female supervisory link between the sub-centre and the PHC.

Functions / Duties of LHV

A. Supervisory Role

  1. Monitoring and supervision of sub-centre activities through regular meetings and periodic field visits
  2. Monitoring activities of ASHAs along with the ANM in her sub-centre area
  3. Monitoring of all National Health Programmes under the medical officer, along with the Health Assistant (Male) and Health Educator - Park's Textbook, p. 1005

B. Maternal and Child Health (MCH)

  1. Antenatal care - registration of pregnant women, ANC check-ups, TT immunization
  2. Conduct approximately 50% of deliveries at the sub-centre level
  3. Supervise deliveries conducted by dais (traditional birth attendants)
  4. Postnatal care of mother and newborn
  5. Referral of high-risk pregnancies/deliveries

C. Family Planning

  1. Counseling eligible couples on spacing and limiting methods
  2. IUCD insertion - certified LHVs are authorized service providers for IUCD 380A / 375 at sub-centre and higher levels
  3. Distribution of oral contraceptive pills (OCPs) and condoms
  4. Maintaining registers of eligible couples - Park's Textbook, Table 25 (Family Planning Services in Public Health Sector)

D. Immunization

  1. Conducting and supervising immunization sessions (Universal Immunization Programme)
  2. Administering vaccines at sub-centre and outreach sessions

E. Nutrition

  1. Counseling on nutrition for pregnant women, nursing mothers, and infants
  2. Distributing nutritional supplements (IFA tablets, etc.)

F. Health Education

  1. Communicating health messages to the community on MCH, sanitation, nutrition, and disease prevention
  2. Conducting Village Health and Nutrition Days (VHNDs) at anganwadi centres

G. National Health Programmes

  • Participates in monitoring of all NHPs (RNTCP/TB, malaria, leprosy, etc.) under MO supervision
