Gangrene is a clinical term, rather than a separate microscopic pattern:
  • Dry gangrene = ischemic coagulative necrosis
  • Wet gangrene = ischemia with superimposed bacterial infection, producing liquefaction

In apoptosis, the plasma membrane remains intact until apoptotic bodies are removed; in necrosis, membrane rupture releases intracellular material and provokes inflammation. Histology: A Text and Atlas With Correlated Cell and Molecular Biology, p. 276.
