left upper quadrant abdominal pain emergency warning signs official health source

Pain in the left hypochondriac region means pain under the left ribs in the upper-left abdomen. Causes range from gas or muscle strain to stomach inflammation, kidney problems, pancreatitis, or spleen-related illness/injury. The spleen is located there and can be painful after trauma, particularly if there is tenderness, dizziness, or shoulder-tip pain.
Seek emergency care now if the pain is sudden or severe, follows a fall/blow to the left ribs or abdomen, or occurs with fainting/dizziness, a fast heartbeat, fever, repeated vomiting, a rigid abdomen, blood in vomit/stool, chest pain, shortness of breath, or pain felt at the left shoulder. These may indicate internal bleeding or another urgent condition. The MedlinePlus abdominal-pain guidance also advises prompt assessment for worsening pain, fever, nausea/vomiting, or persistent symptoms.
If none of those apply, arrange a medical review within 24-48 hours if it does not settle or keeps recurring.
Please tell me:
  • When did it begin and how severe is it, 0-10?
  • Any injury, fever, vomiting, bloating, bowel or urine changes?
  • Does it spread to the back, chest, or left shoulder?
