Classical Conditioning

Simple explanation: You learn to respond to something NEW because it was paired with something OLD.
Pavlov's dog: Bell (new) + Food (old) → Dog salivates to JUST the bell
Memory trick: "BELL before BALL" - the bell comes first, then the natural response follows automatically. It's INvoluntary (you can't control it, like salivating).

Operant Conditioning

Simple explanation: You do something because of what happens AFTER it (reward or punishment). It's VOLuntary - you choose to do it.
The 4-Box Grid (Skinner's quadrants):

Extinction = Stop rewarding/punishing → behavior eventually disappears. Like ignoring a child's tantrum until they stop.

PART 2: TRANSFERENCE & COUNTERTRANSFERENCE

🟢 MATURE DEFENSES (healthy - adults use these)

Mnemonic: "SASH" (Mature adults wear a SASH - the book even says this!)

PART 4: GRIEF

Simple: Normal sadness after loss. NOT a disorder. Adapts within 6 months.
Prolonged Grief Disorder = still intense, persistent, and impairing after 6-12 months = NOW it's a disorder.
Memory trick: "6 months to adapt, 12 months to diagnose a problem"

PART 5: CHILD DEVELOPMENT MILESTONES

The book uses a clever system - remember the first letters!

Infant (0-12 months)

Motor: "Parents Observe"
  • P = Primitive reflexes (Moro, rooting, palmar, Babinski = "Mr. Peanut Butter")
  • P = Posture milestones: lifts head (1mo), rolls/sits (6mo), crawls (8mo), stands (10mo), walks (12-18mo)
  • P = Picks toys hand-to-hand (6-9mo), Pincer grasp (10mo)

Features: Hallucinations (visual), confusion, sleep disturbance, agitation.
Causes mnemonic: "I WATCH"
Infection, Withdrawal, Acute metabolic, Trauma, CNS, Hypoxia (+ drugs, meds)
Key: Most common cause of altered mental status in hospital/ICU. REVERSIBLE.
Drugs that WORSEN delirium: Anticholinergics, benzodiazepines, opioids ("ABO = Always Bad in Old patients")

PART 11: PSYCHOSIS

Simple: Lost touch with reality - false beliefs (delusions), seeing/hearing things (hallucinations).
Types of hallucinations:
