Atarax = hydroxyzine. It is not usually dosed strictly by body weight for routine itching or anxiety. The dose depends on age, indication, formulation, other medicines, and heart-risk factors.
Official Atarax labeling
Children under 6 years: total 50 mg/day, divided into several doses.
Children 6 years and older: total 50-100 mg/day, divided.
Before anesthesia/procedural sedation:0.6 mg/kg once in children. This is a clinician-directed setting only. Atarax prescribing label
Do not calculate a home dose using 0.6 mg/kg unless a clinician specifically prescribed it for a procedure.
Important safety points:
Can cause marked sleepiness, poor coordination, dry mouth, and paradoxical agitation in some children.
Avoid combining with alcohol, opioids, benzodiazepines, sleep medicines, or other sedating antihistamines unless a prescriber says it is safe.
Hydroxyzine can affect heart rhythm (QT prolongation), so it needs caution or avoidance with known long-QT syndrome, fainting/palpitations, heart disease, low potassium/magnesium, or QT-prolonging medicines.
Check the liquid strength carefully. Older Atarax syrup is commonly 10 mg per 5 mL, while some hydroxyzine liquids are 2 mg/mL. These are not interchangeable by volume.
If you provide the age, weight, reason for use (itching, allergy, anxiety, sleep, etc.), and exact bottle concentration, I can help interpret the prescribed dose, but a child’s clinician or pharmacist should confirm the final dose.
