The water you drink isn't really the problem - the swelling comes from where the fluid ends up, not how much total fluid is in your body.
Here's the simple version:
Albumin is like a sponge that keeps water inside your blood vessels. It's a protein made by the liver that stays in your bloodstream and attracts/holds water in through a force called oncotic pressure.
When albumin is low:
That "holding force" drops
Water leaks out of blood vessels into the surrounding tissues (legs, belly, etc.)
This leaked fluid becomes the swelling (edema/ascites)
Why drinking less water doesn't fix it:
Your blood volume actually drops. When fluid leaks into tissues, your bloodstream becomes relatively "dry" - even though your body looks puffy. Your blood vessels have less fluid in them.
Your body panics and holds onto more water. Sensors detect low blood volume and trigger your kidneys to retain salt and water (via hormones like aldosterone and ADH). Drinking less just makes this response kick in harder.
The leak is still happening. Without albumin to hold water in, any fluid you do drink - or that your kidneys retain - just leaks right back out into the tissues again. You're filling a bucket with a hole in it.
Restricting water can make things worse. It can cause dehydration inside your blood vessels while the tissues stay swollen - a dangerous combination.
The real fix has to address the root cause: restore albumin (treat the liver disease, improve nutrition, or give IV albumin), or use diuretics carefully to help kidneys flush the leaked fluid while managing the underlying condition.
So the swelling isn't "too much water in the body" - it's water in the wrong compartment, and low albumin is what keeps sending it to the wrong place.
