NHS common cold cetirizine dry cough sore throat advice

Cetirizine is mainly for allergy symptoms such as sneezing, itchy/watery eyes, itchy nose, or an allergy-related runny nose. It usually does not help much for a viral cold, dry cough, or sore throat. It can also cause sleepiness or dry mouth in some people.
For simple cold symptoms:
  • Drink warm fluids and rest.
  • Honey in warm water/lemon can soothe cough and throat pain for anyone over 1 year old.
  • Gargle warm salt water if able.
  • For fever or throat pain, use paracetamol/acetaminophen or ibuprofen only if safe for the person and according to the package or clinician's advice. Do not combine multiple cold medicines that may contain the same painkiller.
  • Do not give cough/cold products to young children without advice from a pharmacist or clinician.
Cetirizine may be reasonable only if they also have clear allergy symptoms. Check with a pharmacist first if this is for a child, pregnant/breastfeeding person, someone with kidney disease, or someone using other medicines.
Get urgent help for trouble breathing, chest pain, inability to swallow/drooling, confusion, blue lips, or rapid worsening. Seek medical advice for high fever lasting over 3 days, symptoms not improving after about 10 days, or cough lasting over 3 weeks. The NHS cold advice also recommends fluids, rest, and symptom relief rather than antibiotics for typical colds.
