AAOS ACL sprain grade 1 intact fibers patient information

No fracture is reported.
The MRI describes a Grade 1 ACL sprain, meaning the ACL is mildly stretched/inflamed but its fibers are intact. This is not an ACL tear. The PCL, MCL, LCL, patellar retinacula, and patellar ligament are also reported as normal.
Other findings:
  • Minimal fluid in the knee joint
  • Soft-tissue swelling in front of/below the kneecap
  • Edema in the posterior horn of the medial meniscus, but no definite meniscal tear stated
  • Bones and joint surfaces appear normal, so no bone fracture is described
A ligament itself does not “fracture.” It may sprain or tear; a fracture involves bone. Grade 1 sprains are generally mild and stable, with the ligament intact, as described in AAOS ACL guidance.
Please see an orthopedic doctor or physiotherapist for examination and a rehabilitation plan. Seek urgent care if the knee locks, repeatedly gives way, you cannot bear weight, or swelling/pain is rapidly worsening.
