ADA insulin injection sites abdomen thigh upper arm buttock guidance

Sites for subcutaneous insulin injection:
  1. Abdomen - preferred site; inject at least 2 inches (5 cm) away from the umbilicus.
  2. Outer upper arm - posterolateral aspect.
  3. Front and outer thigh - avoid the area near the knee or groin.
  4. Upper outer buttock/hip area.
Use the same general body region at similar times each day if consistent absorption is needed, but rotate individual injection points within that region. Avoid injecting into scars, bruises, inflamed skin, or lumps/lipohypertrophy. Repeated injections at one point can cause fatty-tissue hypertrophy and unpredictable absorption.
