NHS nasal spray saline dry irritated nose advice decongestant use

For simple nasal burning or dryness, use an isotonic saline nasal spray or saline gel from a pharmacy. It moisturizes the lining and is usually the safest first option. Use it as directed on the package.
Avoid using decongestant drops/sprays such as oxymetazoline or xylometazoline just for irritation. They can worsen dryness and should not be used for more than 5 days because they may cause rebound congestion, as the NHS advises.
Also helpful:
  • Avoid smoke, perfume, dust, and very dry air
  • Use a humidifier or steam from a warm shower
  • Do not put essential oils, menthol, or homemade irritants inside the nose
Seek medical advice promptly if there is persistent nosebleeding, crusting/pus, severe pain, facial swelling, fever, or symptoms lasting more than about 1 to 2 weeks.
