Step 4: Complete Vital Signs and Temperature
- Record a full set of vital signs including core temperature - fever can point to sepsis/infection as the underlying cause of the presentation; hypothermia needs active rewarming.
Putting It All Together
Once ABCDE is complete:
- Reassess from A again - the primary survey is a loop, not a single pass. Any deterioration means starting over from Airway.
- Gather a focused history (e.g. AMPLE: Allergies, Medications, Past medical history, Last meal, Events leading to presentation) once the patient is stabilized.
- Decide on disposition - further investigations, definitive treatment, or transfer/referral as appropriate to the level of care needed.
