Pathogenesis

Reactivation - not primary infection - is the mechanism of cerebral toxoplasmosis in AIDS patients. When CD4+ T-cell counts fall below 100/μL, latent bradyzoites reactivate to rapidly dividing tachyzoites, resulting in progressive tissue destruction.

Gross and Microscopic Pathology
