Here is how to make a bruise go away quickly:
How to Get Rid of a Bruise Faster
1. Ice (First 24-48 Hours)
Apply a cold pack or bag of frozen vegetables wrapped in a cloth to the bruise right after the injury. Ice constricts blood vessels, limiting how much blood leaks under the skin and reducing the bruise's size. Apply for 15-20 minutes at a time, several times a day. Never put ice directly on skin.
2. Elevate the Area
Raise the bruised limb above heart level as much as possible. This uses gravity to drain fluid away from the injury, reducing swelling and discoloration.
3. Rest
Avoid strenuous activity. Moving the injured area increases blood flow to it, which can make the bruise larger and more painful.
4. Warm Compress (After 48 Hours)
Once the first 48 hours pass, switch to a warm compress. Heat increases circulation and helps your body reabsorb the pooled blood faster.
5. Arnica Gel or Ointment
Arnica montana is a well-supported herbal remedy. A
2021 review found 18 out of 25 studies showed arnica significantly helped with bruising. Apply a gel or cream to the bruise a few times daily.
6. Vitamin K Cream
Topical vitamin K supports blood clotting at the site. Apply it gently to the bruise daily.
7. Bromelain
Bromelain is an enzyme found in pineapple that reduces inflammation. You can eat fresh pineapple, drink pineapple juice, or take it as a supplement to help speed healing.
8. Arnica + Compression
Wrapping the area with a compression bandage (not too tight) right after injury can limit the bruise from spreading.
What to Avoid
- Do NOT take aspirin or ibuprofen for pain right after bruising - these thin the blood and can make the bruise worse. Use acetaminophen (paracetamol) instead.
- Do NOT massage a fresh bruise - it can worsen it.
- Do NOT put ice directly on skin.
When to See a Doctor
See a doctor if the bruise:
- Is very painful, large, or unexplained
- Does not fade after 2 weeks
- Appears after a minor bump (may signal a clotting disorder)
- Is on your face/head after trauma
Most bruises heal fully within 1-2 weeks with or without treatment. These steps can speed that up noticeably.
