Here is a summary of the devices used to clean the inside of an ET (endotracheal) tube:
ET Tube Cleaning Devices
1. Suction Catheter (most common, routine use)
The standard clinical tool - inserted through the ET tube to suction out secretions. Types include:
Open suction catheter - single-use, requires circuit disconnection
Closed suction catheter (in-line suction catheter) - stays connected to the ventilator circuit, also called a Trach Care catheter or closed suction system
2. endOclear
A commercially available, sterile, single-use wiper device specifically designed to clean the inner lumen of the ET tube. It scrapes away secretions and biofilm from the tube wall and also allows visualization inside the tube. It has a flexible wire and an expandable mesh wiper mechanism.
3. ET Tube Cleaning Brush
A malleable stainless steel shaft brush used primarily in veterinary settings and for reusable ET tubes. Used to mechanically scrub the inner lumen.
One of the first described methods - a 6-Fr Fogarty catheter was passed down the ETT and inflated to wipe secretions off the inner wall. Now largely replaced by dedicated devices.
