Politzerization (also spelled Politzerization) is a medical procedure used to inflate the middle ear. It involves blowing air up the nose while the patient swallows, which opens the Eustachian tube and allows air to enter the middle ear cavity.
The technique is named after Adam Politzer (1835-1920), an Austrian otologist from Vienna who first described and practiced it.
How it works:
A rubber bulb (Politzer bag) is inserted into one nostril
The patient swallows or says a word like "kick" (which closes the nasopharynx)
Air is rapidly squeezed into the nose, forcing it up through the Eustachian tube into the middle ear
Uses:
Treating otitis media with effusion (glue ear) - fluid behind the eardrum
Relieving ear pressure/barotrauma (e.g., after flying)
Clearing Eustachian tube dysfunction
As a diagnostic test to assess Eustachian tube patency
Modern context: It remains a useful, non-invasive technique, particularly in children with middle ear effusions, as an alternative or adjunct to surgery (grommets/ear tubes). It can also be self-administered with modern devices like the Otovent balloon system, which works on the same principle (auto-inflation).
