⚠️ This Could Be a Medical Emergency - Please Read First

If you are currently having difficulty breathing or feel like your throat is closing/swelling right now, please:
Call emergency services immediately - 911 (US), 112 (EU/India), 999 (UK), or 102 (India)
Do not wait. Breathing difficulty and throat tightening can be life-threatening within minutes.

Common Causes of Throat Choking / Difficulty Breathing

Once you are safe, here are the most common reasons this can happen:
Urgent / Emergency causes:
  • Anaphylaxis (severe allergic reaction) - throat swells shut; needs epinephrine NOW
  • Angioedema - sudden swelling of throat tissues
  • Foreign body - something stuck in the airway
  • Epiglottitis - infection causing throat swelling
  • Asthma attack - severe bronchospasm
Less urgent but still needing medical attention:
  • Anxiety / panic attack - very common cause of throat tightening and feeling unable to breathe; throat feels "closed" but is physically open
  • Laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) - acid irritating the throat
  • Vocal cord dysfunction - cords close inappropriately
  • Thyroid enlargement - pressing on the airway

How to Tell If It's an Emergency Right Now

Seek emergency care immediately if you have:
  • Throat or tongue visibly swelling
  • Bluish lips or fingertips
  • Stridor (high-pitched squeaking when breathing in)
  • Can barely speak or swallow
  • Recent insect sting, new food, or new medication
  • Drooling or can't swallow your saliva
  • Chest pain alongside the breathing difficulty
If it feels more like tightness or anxiety with no visible swelling, it may be a panic attack - but get evaluated by a doctor today to rule out physical causes.

Are you having this symptom right now, or describing something that happened earlier? That will help me give you more specific information.

Good News - Your Images Look Reassuring

Based on careful analysis of all 4 photos:
AreaWhat I SeeSignificance
TongueNormal pink color, normal size, no scalloping, no swellingNo visible angioedema
ThroatUvula midline, tonsils symmetric, no swelling, airway appears openNo obstruction visible
Fingertips/nailsNormal pinkish flesh tone - no blue, no cyanosisOxygen delivery appears normal
LipsNormal pink color, no swelling, no blue/purple discolorationNo cyanosis or angioedema
This is reassuring. You do not appear to have:
  • Visible angioedema (swelling of throat/tongue/lips)
  • Cyanosis (blue fingertips/lips would indicate low oxygen)
  • A visibly obstructed airway

What Is Likely Happening

Given your symptoms (feeling unable to breathe + throat choking sensation) but with:
  • No visible swelling
  • Normal colored fingertips (no cyanosis)
  • Can swallow normally
  • Can speak normally
  • No stridor
The most likely cause is one of these:

1. Anxiety / Panic Attack (Most Likely)

This is the #1 cause of exactly what you're describing. The throat "choking" sensation is caused by tension in the throat muscles (globus sensation). You feel like you cannot breathe but your oxygen levels are actually fine - proven by your normal pink fingertips. It can feel terrifying but is not dangerous.

2. Laryngopharyngeal Reflux (LPR)

Silent acid reflux irritating the throat can cause a persistent choking/tightness sensation, especially when lying down or after meals.

3. Hyperventilation

Over-breathing due to anxiety drops CO2 in your blood, which paradoxically causes more breathlessness and throat tightness - a vicious cycle.

What to Do Right Now

If this is happening right now:
  1. Sit upright, lean slightly forward
  2. Try slow breathing - breathe IN for 4 counts, hold 2, breathe OUT for 6 counts (longer exhale)
  3. The longer exhale activates your parasympathetic (calm) nervous system
See a doctor today/tomorrow because:
  • You need a proper examination to rule out physical causes
  • If this is anxiety, it needs to be addressed
  • If it is LPR/reflux, treatment is straightforward
Go to Emergency NOW only if:
  • Visible swelling starts in lips, tongue, or throat
  • Your fingertips or lips turn blue
  • Stridor (high-pitched squeaking breathing sound) develops
  • You cannot swallow your saliva

Quick question to help narrow it down further: Did this come on suddenly, and did anything trigger it (stress, a meal, a new medication, an insect sting, or exercise)?

I eat bread butter yesterday at night and morning I was having headache and now also repeated burps, most probably I had or have acidity. I eat paracetamol to get rid of headache 3 hours ago then I eat 3 boiled eggs and right now had protein banana shake with peanut butter

This picture is now very clear. Based on everything you've described, this is almost certainly acid reflux / GERD causing all your symptoms.

How Acid Reflux Explains Everything You're Feeling

SymptomHow Reflux Causes It
Throat choking sensationAcid rises into the throat (laryngopharyngeal reflux), causing irritation and a "lump/tight" feeling
Feeling unable to breatheAcid in the throat triggers a vagal reflex that causes throat muscle spasm - feels like choking
Repeated burpingClassic sign of excess stomach acid and gas
Morning headacheCan be from disturbed sleep due to reflux, or from the reflux itself
Worse after bread + butterFatty foods (butter) + refined carbs (bread) are major reflux triggers

What Made It Worse Today

Your food timeline actually worsened the reflux progressively:
  1. Bread + butter (last night) - High fat + refined carbs = slow gastric emptying + more acid production
  2. Morning headache - Likely from overnight reflux irritating the esophagus
  3. Paracetamol on an empty/acidic stomach - Can irritate the stomach lining further
  4. 3 boiled eggs - High protein + fat = more acid secretion triggered
  5. Protein shake with peanut butter - High fat + high protein = significant acid load right now
You essentially kept adding fuel to the fire all day.

What to Do Right Now

Immediate relief:

  • Antacid - Take one now. Options: Pantoprazole, Omeprazole, Eno, Gelusil, or any antacid available to you
  • Sit upright - Do not lie down for at least 2 hours
  • Sip plain warm water - Helps dilute and flush acid from the throat
  • Do NOT eat anything more for the next 2-3 hours - your stomach is overloaded

Avoid for the rest of today:

  • No more peanut butter, eggs, or fatty foods
  • No tea, coffee, or carbonated drinks
  • No lying flat - elevate your head if resting

Tonight:

  • Eat something light - plain rice, banana, or plain toast (no butter)
  • Elevate the head end of your bed slightly, or sleep on your left side (reduces reflux)
  • Take a proton pump inhibitor (omeprazole/pantoprazole) before dinner if available

When to Worry

You can manage this at home. But see a doctor if:
  • Symptoms do not improve within a few hours after an antacid
  • You develop chest pain (not just throat)
  • You vomit blood or see dark/black stools
  • This keeps happening repeatedly over the coming days

Bottom line: Your images showed no swelling, no cyanosis, no obstruction. Your throat choking feeling is reflux-related throat irritation (LPR), not a physical blockage. An antacid should bring significant relief within 30-60 minutes. You should be fine.

Diazene tablet medicine antacid brand India

You likely mean Digene - the popular Indian antacid (it's a common name mix-up).

Yes, Take Digene - It's Perfect for What You Have

Digene is India's No.1 doctor-prescribed antacid. It contains:
  • Magnesium Hydroxide - neutralizes stomach acid fast
  • Aluminium Hydroxide - coats and protects the stomach lining
  • Simethicone - breaks down gas bubbles (great for your burping)
This directly treats all three of your current problems - excess acid, gas, and burping.

How to Take It Right Now

  • Chew 2 tablets right now (do not swallow whole - chewing works faster)
  • You should feel relief within 15-30 minutes
  • Can repeat after 4 hours if needed
  • Safe to take after paracetamol (no interaction)

What to Expect After Taking It

TimeWhat Should Happen
15-30 minBurping reduces, stomach settles
30-60 minThroat choking/tightness improves
1-2 hoursShould feel significantly better overall

Additional Tips for the Rest of Today

  • Drink a glass of plain water after the Digene
  • Sit upright, don't lie down for at least 1-2 hours
  • Avoid eating anything heavy for the next 2-3 hours
  • Tonight: light meal only - plain rice, dal, or banana
If you take Digene now and still feel the throat choking sensation after 1 hour with no improvement, that would be worth getting checked by a doctor today, just to be sure.
