A 23 yr old man slipped from stairs and had a swelling

Can you share a few more details so I can help safely?
  • Where is the swelling? (ankle, knee, wrist, head, etc.)
  • When did the fall happen?
  • Can he move the area and bear weight/use it?
  • Severe pain, deformity, numbness, or tingling?
  • Any head injury signs: vomiting, fainting, confusion, severe headache, drowsiness?
  • Any open wound/bleeding?
For now, do immediate first aid:
  1. Rest the injured part.
  2. Ice 15 to 20 min every 2 to 3 hours (cloth between ice and skin).
  3. Compression with a snug elastic bandage (not too tight).
  4. Elevation above heart level.
  5. Use paracetamol/acetaminophen for pain (avoid ibuprofen if there is possible fracture, kidney disease, ulcers, or bleeding risk).
Go to emergency now if:
  • Unable to stand/use limb
  • Visible deformity or rapidly increasing swelling
  • Severe pain
  • Numb/cold/blue limb
  • Head injury warning signs listed above.
