epiesthesia medical term definition spelling
You likely mean paresthesia.
It is an abnormal skin sensation such as tingling, pins and needles, prickling, burning, or numbness, often in the hands or feet. It commonly occurs temporarily when a limb “falls asleep” from pressure on a nerve. Persistent or recurrent paresthesia can result from nerve compression, diabetes, vitamin deficiency, or neurological conditions.
If it begins suddenly with weakness, facial drooping, difficulty speaking, severe headache, or loss of balance, seek emergency care because it can indicate a stroke.
Hyperesthesia means increased sensitivity to sensory stimuli, especially touch. Normal sensations, such as light touch, clothing, warmth, or cold, may feel unusually intense or unpleasant.
It may occur with nerve irritation or neuropathy, inflammation, injury, migraine, shingles, or other neurological disorders.
It does not necessarily mean pain. If the heightened sensation is specifically painful, the term is hyperalgesia.
Hypoesthesia is the opposite: reduced sensation.
Textbook definition: hyperesthesia is “increased sensory experience with a stimulus.” - Bradley and Daroff's Neurology in Clinical Practice, section “Sensory Localization.”
