How many hair fall normal per day

Losing 50 to 100 hairs per day is considered normal for most adults.
Here's a bit more context:
  • The average human scalp has about 100,000 hair follicles.
  • Each hair goes through a growth cycle: Anagen (growth, 2-6 years) → Catagen (transition, ~2 weeks) → Telogen (resting/shedding, ~3 months).
  • At any given time, roughly 10-15% of hairs are in the telogen (shedding) phase, which accounts for the daily loss.
  • On days you wash your hair, you may notice more hairs in the drain - this is normal, as washing dislodges hairs that were already shed.
When to be concerned:
  • Losing more than 150-200 hairs/day consistently
  • Noticeable thinning, bald patches, or a widening part
  • Sudden, excessive shedding (called telogen effluvium), often triggered by stress, illness, nutritional deficiency, hormonal changes, or major surgery
If you're seeing clumps of hair or significant scalp visibility, it's worth consulting a dermatologist.
