hypersensitivity immunology definition

Hypersensitivity is an exaggerated or inappropriate immune response to an antigen that causes tissue injury, inflammation, or disease in the host.
It is classically divided into four types:
  1. Type I - immediate, IgE-mediated
  2. Type II - antibody-mediated cytotoxicity
  3. Type III - immune complex-mediated
  4. Type IV - delayed, T-cell-mediated
