Tetracyclines are broad-spectrum bacteriostatic antibiotics that inhibit protein synthesis by blocking the 30S ribosomal subunit, preventing aminoacyl-tRNA attachment. They cover gram-positives, gram-negatives, atypicals (Mycoplasma, Chlamydia), rickettsiae, and spirochetes.
