I don't have a book titled "Monoos Physio" in this library, so it's likely a different resource (maybe a course/notes set) that isn't part of what I can search. Here's where the same topic - neuromuscular junction (NMJ) blockers - is covered in the physiology textbooks I do have access to:

  • Look for Table 1.3 "Agents Affecting Neuromuscular Transmission" (p. 36) - it lists the classic blockers with mechanism and effect:
    • Botulinum toxin - blocks ACh release from presynaptic terminals -> total blockade, respiratory paralysis, death
    • Curare - competes with ACh for nicotinic receptors on the motor end plate -> decreases end-plate potential (EPP), paralysis at high doses
    • Hemicholinium - blocks presynaptic choline reuptake -> depletes ACh stores
    • (Neostigmine is also listed as the opposite - an AChE inhibitor that enhances transmission, useful contrast for understanding blockers)
  • Immediately after this table is Box 1.5, a clinical case on Myasthenia Gravis, which ties the receptor-blockade concept to a real autoimmune disease (antibodies blocking ACh receptors).
Guyton and Hall, Textbook of Medical Physiology
  • Chapter 7, "The Neuromuscular Junction - The Motor End Plate," starting around the section on secretion of acetylcholine - discusses drugs/toxins that interfere with transmission at the NMJ (curariform drugs, anticholinesterases, botulinum toxin) in the same chapter.
Ganong's Review of Medical Physiology, 26th Ed.
  • Chapter on "Neuromuscular Transmission" also covers depolarizing vs. nondepolarizing blockers conceptually.
