Heart block is a delay or failure of electrical impulses traveling from the atria to the ventricles, usually through the AV node or His-Purkinje system. It can cause slow pulse, dizziness, fainting, and in severe cases reduced cardiac output.
For a 2nd-year nursing student, study it in this order:
Normal cardiac conduction system
SA node, AV node, bundle of His, bundle branches, Purkinje fibers
Normal ECG components: P wave, PR interval, QRS complex
Causes and risk factors
Ischemic heart disease or myocardial infarction
Age-related conduction-system fibrosis
Drugs such as beta-blockers, digoxin, verapamil/diltiazem
Electrolyte abnormalities, especially hyperkalemia
Myocarditis, congenital heart disease, post-cardiac surgery
Types of heart block
First-degree AV block
Second-degree AV block: Mobitz type I (Wenckebach) and Mobitz type II
