Secondary Prevention (Speaker Notes)

This slide is about secondary prevention in the context of substance addiction/alcohol use disorder - meaning the disease has already started, and we're trying to stop it from getting worse.

1. Early Diagnosis The first step is catching the problem early - before the addiction becomes severe or causes major damage. Early identification means the person can get help sooner, improving chances of recovery.

2. Adequate Treatment - this covers three areas:
- Of Withdrawal Symptoms When a person stops using a substance, their body reacts - causing tremors, sweating, nausea, seizures, etc. These withdrawal symptoms must be managed medically (e.g., with medications like benzodiazepines for alcohol withdrawal) so the process is safe and the person doesn't relapse just to feel better.
- Of Addiction itself (Physiological, Psychological, and Social) Addiction isn't just physical. Treatment must address:
  • Physiological - the body's physical dependence (detox, medications)
  • Psychological - cravings, behavior patterns, trauma (counseling, CBT)
  • Social - family issues, peer pressure, unemployment (social support, rehabilitation)
- Of Complications Long-term addiction causes serious health problems that also need treatment:
  • Depression & Anxiety - very common co-existing mental health conditions
  • Vitamin deficiency/Malnutrition - alcohol especially depletes B vitamins (like thiamine), causing brain damage if untreated
  • Cirrhosis of Liver - chronic alcohol damages liver cells, leading to scarring and liver failure

Summary for speaker: Secondary prevention = you didn't stop them from starting, but you caught it in time. Now treat everything - the withdrawal, the addiction at all three levels, and the damage it's already done to the body and mind.
