Bilirubin normal range

Normal bilirubin ranges in adults:
  • Total bilirubin: 0.1 - 1.2 mg/dL (1.7 - 20.5 µmol/L)
  • Direct (conjugated) bilirubin: 0 - 0.3 mg/dL (0 - 5.1 µmol/L)
  • Indirect (unconjugated) bilirubin: 0.1 - 1.0 mg/dL (1.7 - 17.1 µmol/L)
Jaundice (visible yellowing) typically appears when total bilirubin exceeds 2.5 - 3.0 mg/dL.
In neonates, ranges differ significantly - physiologic neonatal jaundice peaks around day 3-5, with total bilirubin up to ~12 mg/dL considered acceptable in term infants (treatment thresholds vary by age in hours and gestational age).
