Meckel diverticulum (MD) is the most common congenital anomaly of the gastrointestinal tract and the most common true diverticulum in the body. Diagnosis

1. Meckel (Technetium-99m Pertechnetate) Scan - Meckel Scan

  • Investigation of choice for suspected bleeding MD
  • Sensitivity: 80-90%, Specificity: ~95% in children

4. Barium Studies

  • Small bowel follow-through: usually not useful - MD may not fill with barium and empties rapidly
  • Enteroclysis: better than follow-through; contrast under pressure fills the diverticulum
