Here is a complete breakdown of normal CRP levels:

C-Reactive Protein (CRP) - Normal Levels & Reference Ranges

Standard CRP (Conventional Assay)

CRP LevelClassificationNotes
< 0.3 mg/dL (< 3 mg/L)NormalMost healthy adults fall here
0.3 - 1.0 mg/dL (3-10 mg/L)Minor elevationObesity, pregnancy, depression, diabetes, sedentary lifestyle
1.0 - 10.0 mg/dL (10-100 mg/L)Moderate elevationAutoimmune disease, heart attack, pancreatitis, bronchitis
> 10.0 mg/dL (> 100 mg/L)Marked elevationAcute bacterial/viral infections, vasculitis, major trauma
> 50.0 mg/dL (> 500 mg/L)Severe elevationAcute bacterial infection (~90% of cases)
Unit note: Many labs report in mg/L, others in mg/dL. To convert: 1 mg/dL = 10 mg/L.

High-Sensitivity CRP (hs-CRP) - Cardiovascular Risk

Used specifically for cardiovascular disease risk assessment. Per Medscape / standard guidelines:
hs-CRP LevelCardiovascular Risk
< 1 mg/LLow risk
1 - 3 mg/LIntermediate risk
> 3 mg/LHigh risk
  • A cutoff of >= 2 mg/L is used to identify persistent inflammation in patients already on statin therapy for cardiovascular disease.
  • Normal overall for hs-CRP is considered < 3 mg/L.

Key Points

  • Lab variation: Each lab sets its own reference range. Always check the reference interval printed on your report.
  • Age & sex: Females and elderly individuals naturally tend to have slightly higher CRP levels.
  • Race: African Americans may have slightly higher baseline levels.
  • Speed advantage: CRP rises faster than ESR (erythrocyte sedimentation rate) and also returns to normal faster after an acute event, per Tintinalli's Emergency Medicine.
  • Low CRP: There is no "abnormally low" CRP - a result of 0 or near-0 is simply healthy/normal.

When CRP Is Used

  1. Infection/Inflammation monitoring - standard CRP assay
  2. Cardiovascular risk stratification - hs-CRP assay (added to Framingham risk score, lipid panels)
  3. Treatment response - falling CRP indicates resolving inflammation or infection
  4. Post-surgical monitoring - CRP normally peaks ~48-72 hours post-op, then declines
If your CRP result came back elevated and you'd like help interpreting it in context, share more details and I can help further.
