Difference between genetic and hereditary

The terms are related but distinct:
Genetic refers to anything involving genes or DNA - a condition can be "genetic" simply because it involves a change in the gene sequence, whether that change was inherited or arose spontaneously (de novo mutation).
Hereditary means the trait or condition is passed down from parent to child through the germline (sperm or egg cells). All hereditary conditions are genetic, but not all genetic conditions are hereditary.

Concrete examples:
  • Genetic but NOT hereditary: A spontaneous BRCA1 mutation arising only in a tumor cell (somatic mutation) - it affects that person but won't be passed to children. Similarly, Down syndrome from a random trisomy 21 error during egg formation is genetic but usually not inherited from a parent.
  • Both genetic AND hereditary: Huntington's disease, cystic fibrosis, sickle cell disease - these are caused by gene mutations AND are passed from parent to child.
Simple rule: Hereditary = inherited through family lineage. Genetic = involves the genome, regardless of origin. Hereditary is a subset of genetic.
