NHS mouth ulcers treatment corticosteroid mouth ulcer gel when to see doctor
For a simple mouth ulcer, Becasule/B-complex is not usually necessary unless you have a documented B12, iron, or folate deficiency, or recurrent ulcers linked to poor nutrition.
You can use one of these local treatments:
- Protective oral-ulcer gel containing choline salicylate or hyaluronic acid, applied directly to the ulcer as directed on the pack.
- Lidocaine/lignocaine oral gel for short-term pain relief before meals. Do not eat immediately afterward because the mouth can become numb.
- Benzydamine mouthwash or spray can reduce pain and inflammation.
- For a very painful typical aphthous ulcer, a clinician or pharmacist may advise a topical steroid dental paste, such as triamcinolone acetonide 0.1% oral paste, usually applied as a thin film after drying the ulcer. Avoid self-starting steroid creams meant for skin inside the mouth.
Also rinse gently with warm salt water, avoid spicy/sour foods, and check for a sharp tooth, braces, or accidental biting. Most ulcers heal within 1-2 weeks. The NHS mouth-ulcer advice lists pain-relieving gels, mouthwashes, and corticosteroid preparations as treatment options.
See a dentist/doctor if it lasts more than 3 weeks, is very large, recurrent, bleeding, increasingly red/painful, or you have fever, weight loss, genital ulcers, eye symptoms, or frequent recurrences.
