ASHA's Postnatal / HBNC Visit Schedule

ASHA makes visits to all newborns up to 42 days of life according to a specified schedule under the Home Based Newborn Care (HBNC) programme.
Visit Schedule by Type of Delivery

Special Situations
- Twin/Triplet deliveries: Incentive is doubled (Rs. 500) or tripled (Rs. 750) respectively.
- Delivery at maternal house: Two ASHAs share visits - one at the maternal house post-delivery, another at the husband's house when the newborn returns. Each ASHA completing 3 or more visits is entitled to Rs. 125 (half of Rs. 250). Less than 3 visits = no incentive.
- LBW/Preterm babies: Number of home visits is increased; weight monitoring and KMC support are provided.
Incentive Payment Rules
Incentive of Rs. 250 is paid on the 45th day, subject to:
- Recording of birth weight in the Mother and Child Protection (MCP) card
- Completion of immunization
What ASHA Does During Postnatal Visits
During these visits, ASHA is responsible for:
- Exclusive breastfeeding promotion and correct positioning
- Weighing the baby and monitoring growth
- Promoting hand-washing and personal hygiene
- Skin, cord, and eye care
- Detecting signs of neonatal sepsis and referring appropriately
- Recognizing postpartum complications in the mother and referring
- Counselling on family planning
- Discouraging unhealthy practices (early bathing, bottle feeding)
- For LBW/preterm: monitoring weight gain, supporting Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC), and increasing visit frequency

- Home delivery = 7 visits (starts Day 1): 1, 3, 7, 14, 21, 28, 42
- Institutional delivery = 6 visits (starts Day 3): 3, 7, 14, 21, 28, 42
- LSCS = 5 visits (starts Day 7)
