Here's a step-by-step guide to paint this beautiful portrait in acrylic!
Acrylic Painting Layout - Step by Step
Subject: Young woman in a black & gold saree, holding a floral arch, with a Kathakali motif in the background.
🎨 Materials You Need
- Acrylic paints: Ivory Black, Raw Umber, Burnt Sienna, Yellow Ochre, Gold (metallic), Titanium White, Sap Green, Cadmium Yellow, Pink/Rose
- Canvas: 12x16 inch (portrait orientation)
- Brushes: flat (large), round (medium & fine), fan brush
- Palette, water cup, pencil for sketching
Step 1 - Background Block-In
Paint the upper background with a soft grey-white (white + touch of grey). Block in the red curtain on the right with Cadmium Red + Burnt Umber. Roughly suggest the Kathakali circular motif in the top-right corner using ochre and red circles - keep it loose.
Step 2 - Floral Arch Layout
Using a pencil or thin brush, sketch a curved arch shape from lower-left, sweeping up and over. Block in flowers loosely:
- Orange roses - Cadmium Orange + Yellow Ochre
- Pink flowers - White + Rose + touch of Red
- White roses - Titanium White + slight warm grey shadow
- Leaves - Sap Green + Black (dark) and Sap Green + Yellow (light)
Don't detail yet - just shapes and colour masses.
Step 3 - Figure Sketch & Skin Tone
Lightly sketch the figure's proportions with pencil:
- Head roughly 1/5 of canvas height
- Torso slightly turned (3/4 view)
- One arm raised to hold the arch
Mix skin tone: Burnt Sienna + Yellow Ochre + White. Block in the face, neck, and arm as flat mid-tone shapes. Add shadow side with Burnt Sienna + Raw Umber (left/upper side of face has warm sunlight, lower chin is in shadow).
Step 4 - Hair
Use Ivory Black + touch of Burnt Umber for the main hair mass. Long, flowing to the right. Leave some highlight areas for later. Use a fan brush or dry-brush for loose, wispy edges.
Step 5 - Saree & Blouse
- Black saree body: Ivory Black base. Add subtle gold/silver shimmer lines using a fine brush with Yellow Ochre or metallic gold paint - diagonal stripe pattern.
- Gold blouse: Yellow Ochre + Cadmium Yellow + White for highlights. Add dark gold (Raw Umber + Yellow) for shadow/folds.
- Gold border embroidery: Use a fine round brush to dab small floral motifs along the saree border in metallic gold.
Step 6 - Jewelry & Accessories
- Earrings: Small gold dots and dangles - dot with a toothpick or fine brush
- Bangles: Stack of dark bangles on both wrists - alternate Black and Gold rings
- Necklace: Thin gold chain at the neckline
Step 7 - Face Details
Build up the face in thin layers:
- Add warm highlight (White + Yellow Ochre) on forehead, nose bridge, cheekbone
- Paint eyes: dark brown iris, black pupil, white highlight dot
- Lips: Rose + White, slightly open/smiling
- Eyebrows: dark, defined strokes
- Subtle bindi on forehead (red dot)
Step 8 - Flowers - Final Detail Pass
Go back to the floral arch and add:
- Petal highlights (White dry-brushed on rose edges)
- Dark centres on flowers
- Leaf veins with a liner brush
Step 9 - Final Touches
- Brighten the sunlit areas (right shoulder, cheek, arm) with a warm white-yellow glaze
- Soften background edges so the subject pops
- Add the Kathakali face motif details (coloured concentric rings) in the upper-right
- Sign your painting!

Start with big shapes and loose colour, then layer in detail. Acrylics dry fast - work section by section, and keep a wet palette or mist your paints. Good luck with your painting! 🎨
