SOMA San Francisco to Mountain View transit options 2026

Here are your main options from SOMA (San Francisco) to Mountain View:

1. Caltrain (Recommended for transit)

  • Walk or take a short Muni/rideshare to 4th & King Caltrain Station (it's right at the edge of SOMA)
  • Take Caltrain southbound to Mountain View Caltrain Station
  • Trip takes roughly 50-70 minutes depending on the train (local vs. limited)
  • Note: On Sundays, service is less frequent - check the Caltrain schedule before heading out

2. BART + VTA Light Rail

  • Take BART from a SOMA-area station (e.g., Civic Center, Powell, or Montgomery) southbound
  • Transfer at Fremont or Berryessa/North San Jose to VTA
  • This is longer and involves more transfers - not the most efficient option

3. BART to Millbrae + Caltrain

  • Take BART to Millbrae, then transfer to Caltrain southbound to Mountain View
  • Works but adds extra time vs. going straight to 4th & King

4. Drive / Rideshare (Uber/Lyft)

  • About 35-50 minutes by car depending on traffic (US-101 or I-280)
  • On a Sunday evening, traffic is generally light

5. SamTrans Bus

  • Available but very slow (1.5-2+ hours) - not recommended unless you have no other option

Best bet right now (Sunday evening): Check the Caltrain app for the next departure from 4th & King - it's your fastest and most comfortable transit option. If you miss the last train or service is sparse, a rideshare is the practical backup.

Can we use this tickets to board caltrain

No, you cannot use these tickets. Here's why:
Both Single Ride-Adult tickets show:
  • Remaining uses: 0 - they have already been used up
  • Expiration: 05/24/2026 6:23 PM - they expired earlier today
You'll need to purchase new tickets before boarding. The trip to Mountain View is shown as $11.50, so you'll need to buy a new ticket in the Caltrain app (tap "Available" tab to purchase).
