Cephalalgia means headache, or pain located in the head. It is a symptom, not a diagnosis.
Headaches are broadly classified as:
- Primary: migraine, tension-type headache, cluster headache
- Secondary: due to another cause, such as infection, trauma, high blood pressure crisis, bleeding, glaucoma, medication overuse, or other disorders. The ICHD-3 classification provides the standard diagnostic framework.
Seek urgent care for a sudden “worst-ever” headache, headache after head injury, fever with neck stiffness, confusion/fainting, seizure, weakness/numbness, new visual loss, or a new severe headache during pregnancy or after age 50.
