Here's your full trip plan:

Trip Plan: Banja Luka → Mostar → Sarajevo

Dates: July 4 (evening) - July 6 (morning flight at 08:00)

DAY 1 - Saturday, July 4

Banja Luka → Mostar

19:00 - Depart Banja Luka by car
  • Distance: ~230 km
  • Drive time: ~3.5 to 4 hours (via M-16 and then south through Herzegovina)
23:00 - Arrive Mostar, check in to your hotel
  • Get a quick drink in the Old Town if energy allows - Stari Most looks magical at night

DAY 2 - Sunday, July 5

Full Day in Mostar

Morning (09:00 - 12:00)
  • Stari Most (Old Bridge) - the iconic 16th-century Ottoman arch bridge, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Walk it, photograph it from both banks
  • Kujundžiluk Bazaar - the cobbled old bazaar street right next to the bridge, great for coffee, copper crafts, and Turkish delight
  • Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque area / Koski Mehmed Pasha Mosque - climb the minaret for a panoramic view of the bridge and the Neretva River
Late Morning (12:00 - 13:00)
  • Watch the bridge divers (Mostar Diving Club) - local men jump 21 meters off the bridge, a tradition since the Ottoman era
  • Lunch at a riverside restaurant (try cevapi, burek, or fresh trout)
Afternoon (13:30 - 16:00)
  • Museum of the Old Bridge (Muzej Stari Most) - tells the full story of the bridge's destruction in 1993 and its UNESCO-guided reconstruction
  • Crooked Bridge (Kriva Cuprija) - a smaller, older bridge nearby, often missed by tourists
  • Wander the west (Croat) side of the city - completely different atmosphere
  • Bulevar (War Frontline) - the old dividing line between east and west Mostar, visible ruins and powerful history
Optional side trip (if time allows)
  • Blagaj Tekija (~12 km southeast of Mostar) - a stunning 16th-century Dervish monastery built into a cliff at the source of the Buna river. Takes about 1.5 hrs round trip
Evening (17:30 - 19:30)
  • Sunset from the banks of the Neretva looking at the bridge - the light is incredible at golden hour
  • Dinner in Old Town
20:00 - Depart Mostar → Sarajevo
  • Distance: ~120 km
  • Drive time: ~2 hours (via M17 through the Neretva valley - scenic even at night)
22:00 - Arrive Sarajevo, check in

DAY 3 - Monday, July 6 (FLIGHT DAY)

Sarajevo - Morning Only

Flight departs 08:00 - Sarajevo Butmir Airport (SJJ) is only ~12 km from the city center (~20 min drive)
  • Wake up by 05:30, leave hotel by 06:00 at the latest to allow check-in and security time
  • If your hotel is in Baščaršija (Old Town), a taxi takes ~20 min to the airport
If you arrive Sarajevo on the evening of July 5 and want to squeeze in a quick look:
  • A late-night walk through Baščaršija (the Ottoman bazaar, open late in summer) is absolutely worth it - 20 min on foot, very atmospheric

What You'll Miss in Sarajevo (Future Trip Ideas)

Since you only have an overnight, here's what deserves a return visit:
  • Tunnel of Hope Museum (WWII/Siege tunnel)
  • Latin Bridge (where WWI started - Archduke Franz Ferdinand assassination site)
  • Yellow Fortress (Žuta tabija) viewpoint
  • National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina
  • War Roses (mortar shell scars filled with red resin, found on pavements across the city)
