ROP screening criteria
Screen with a dilated retinal examination if:
  • Gestational age ≤30 weeks, or
  • Birth weight <1500 g, or
  • Gestational age >30 weeks with an unstable clinical course, especially if requiring cardiorespiratory support.

First examination
  • ≤27 weeks gestation: at 31 weeks postmenstrual age (PMA)
  • ≥28 weeks gestation: at 4 weeks chronological age
  • <25 weeks gestation: consider an earlier examination at 6 weeks chronological age, particularly with significant comorbidity, to identify aggressive posterior ROP early.
