trick to remember pallor

Pallor = PALe coLOR - lack of normal skin/mucosal color due to reduced blood flow or hemoglobin.
Quick memory trick:
"PALLOR" = People Always Look Little Or Red-less
But the more useful mnemonics are for causes of pallor:

Causes of Pallor - Mnemonic: "PALLOR"

LetterCause
PPoor perfusion (shock, heart failure)
AAnemia (any cause)
LLeukemia / blood cancers
LLow temperature (vasoconstriction, cold)
OObstruction (arterial - PVD, Raynaud's)
RRenal failure (chronic - EPO deficiency)

Where to Look for Pallor (Exam Sites)

"Can't Miss Checking Every Nail"
  • C - Conjunctiva (lower eyelid - most reliable)
  • M - Mucous membranes (inside mouth/lips)
  • C - Creases of palm
  • E - Earlobes
  • N - Nail beds

Quick Distinguishing Tips

  • Conjunctival pallor = best indicator of anemia (not affected by skin tone)
  • Central pallor (tongue, mucosa) = true pallor vs. peripheral (could be cold/shock)
  • Lemon-yellow pallor = B12/folate deficiency anemia
  • Waxy/greenish pallor = iron deficiency (historically "chlorosis")
The single best trick: pull down the lower eyelid - if the inner rim looks white/pale instead of pink-red, that's significant pallor regardless of the patient's natural skin color.
